Go back a
short while, and most shoppers would have thought
radicchio was one of the lesser-known operas. Today we
know it for being one of the many species of lettuce,
actually a form of Italian chicory. Slightly bitter sweet,
radicchio is a natural accompaniment to salads and various
anti-pasta dishes. Its very complexity exactly parallels
the new gourmet store that has borrowed its name.
Radicchio’s
in McMurray is a 50,000-square foot emporium of some of
the freshest, most desirable and most fascinating meats,
seafood, cheeses and produce to be found in the South
Hills.
From among the
U.S. Department of Agriculture’s designated Choice and
Prime Meats, Radicchio’s offers mouth-watering
selections of beef, lamb, pork and veal. Delivered daily
from the nation’s seaports come the freshest fish and
shellfish, including several species not familiar to
Pittsburghers. Ask for cheese and you might be astounded
at the unimaginable variety offered at Radicchio’s.
And if you are
looking for convenience as well as quality, Radicchio’s
is worth a visit just to sample the Gourmet Prepared
Entrees, such as the veal ossobuco, the roasted leg of
lamb and the chicken asiago.
And notes Mark
Yarsike, the owner of Radicchio’s International
Marketplace, “It is not uncommon to see a shopper
standing in the aisles for literally an hour reading and
rereading all the different labels of the unique items we
have available. And if we don’t have it, we’ll get it
in.”
