Character
Counts in Peters Township
“Character Counts”
represents a group of individuals who have come together to
promote responsible interaction among parents, students, and
school and community members in Peters Township to actively
encourage drug and alcohol-free behavior in our children, and
responsible behavior in adults.
Character Counts
sponsors and coordinates programs for all age levels on various
topics including bullying, drug, and alcohol abuse. The group
recognizes community members who are role models and exemplify
respect, responsibility and honesty.
Fall programs include
the following:
“Walk for Awareness”
– On Sunday, October 14th at 2 p.m. at Peterswood Park. The high
school marching band will lead off the walk and the community is
encouraged to participate. Refreshments to follow the walk. This
event kicks off red ribbon week in our school district with
programs and contests in the various schools throughout the week.
On Tuesday evening,
October 16th, at 7 p.m., a program at the high school is designed
for parents, concerned citizens, and youth (with parental
discretion). The panel discussion will include presentations on
drug and alcohol abuse, addiction, and destructive decisions.
Darius Carlins of UPMC, along with others, will discuss education
and parenting, along with sharing compelling personal and
professional experiences.
A Recognition Ceremony
will be held at the high school on Thursday, November 1st at 7
p.m. to honor those in the community who exemplify the ideals of
Character Counts. To nominate someone, visit the township website:
www.peterstownship.com.
The Peters Township
Chamber of Commerce has been involved with this initiative since
its inception and encourages parents and community leaders to
become involved with the committee’s endeavors.

Washington
Federal Keeps it Local
When it comes to
hometown banking, Washington Federal Savings Bank is about as
local as they come.
The bank has been in
Washington County since 1898.
It’s been part of
the Peters Township business scene for some 30 years.
And the bank’s new
president, Brian Smith, happens to be a Peters resident.
For the bank’s
customers, that translates into service specifically designed to
the needs of local residents.
“We listen to our
customer feedback, and we listen to employees at all levels, then
we meet monthly to figure out how we can tweak our services to
best meet the demands of our customers,” says Michael Chaido,
assistant vice-president. “That’s what separates us from the
competition. All of our decisions are made by people who live in
Washington County. We’re tailoring our products for our
neighbors.”
That local touch is
combined with cutting edge technology including 24-hour online
banking, an expanding network of ATM locations, and versatile loan
centers.
The bank has a long
history of re-investing in the community. Each year, Washington
Federal donates 10 percent of its after-tax profits to local
non-profit groups. The total donations are in the millions of
dollars each year.
In what has to be one
of the most unique programs offered by any bank, Washington
Federal give its customers a say in where that money goes.
Every year, each bank customer gets a ballot and a chance to vote
on which nonprofit groups should receive money. The top 20 choices
all receive a donation. Recent beneficiaries include the
Washington City Mission, the Peters Township Library, and the
Washington Women’s Shelter.
Washington Federal
Savings Bank has two locations in Peters Township:
3616 Washington Road; phone: 724 941 4275 and
603 East McMurray Road; phone: 724-941-8430.
