One of the things that prevent people from visiting a gym to work out is that, in today’s overscheduled world, it’s difficult to make time to drive to a fitness facility on a regular basis. That’s why, for today’s fitness-minded homeowners, the trend is to bring the gym to them through installing customized home workout rooms.

Not too long ago people’s conception of a home gym was a treadmill tucked in the corner of the room or some weights laying downstairs in the basement. Today’s home workout rooms are tailored to meet a homeowner’s specific needs while complementing their individual style.

For those whose schedule prevents them from being fitness fanatics, a home gym is a valuable and wise investment, especially when time constraints make a dedicated gym membership impossible. You can get all the exercise you need while avoiding traffic (both on the roads and in the gym).

Home gyms are often added by revamping existing space in current homes, and are sometimes included in the design plans for new homes. The basement is usually the best location since it is usually built on concrete and can handle whatever weight load the gym itself will generate.

Here in Pittsburgh, home remodelers see a surge in requests for home gyms during the cold winter months. As hard as it can be to drag oneself to the gym during a warm summer day, it’s doubly difficult when it’s 35 degrees with freezing rain.

The beauty of a home gym is that it has exactly what you require to stay in shape, without the hassle of sharing equipment at a public gym. This makes for a quick and efficient workout, and you won’t have to worry about getting athlete’s foot in the showers. Plus you can tune the radio or television to whatever station and volume you prefer.

Workout rooms don’t always mean weights and treadmills, though. Here in Peters Township, Cathy and Dennis McNamara decided to create a room for their daughters to practice their dance lessons. They re-modeled their recreation room by adding new can lighting, refinishing the floors with a bamboo laminate wood, upgrading a powder room with new tile, cabinets, and fixtures and organizing a walk in closet with shelving and racks. Now the girls have a nice, clean, open room complete with a wall of mirrors and new lighting to practice tap dancing. They also received a little encouragement from dad, who promised that he would even put on a little tapping expo for them just for entertainment’s sake.

In the future, if the girls decide to hang up their dancing shoes, the space can be easily converted into a traditional home gym or an entertainment room.
