These Boots are Made for Walking ![]()
Local residents make heavy use of the walking and biking trails available in Peters Township. On any sunny day, the Montour and Arrowhead Trails are full of folks walking, hiking, pushing strollers, bicycling, and otherwise enjoying the outdoors.
This Fall, the amount of trail accessible from Peters is going to get a lot bigger. That’s when the Montour Trail Council expects to complete work on the previously undeveloped two-mile section from the western end of Arrowhead Trail parking to Cecil Township. “Once our construction project is finished this Fall, you could start at the east side of Peters and ride 35 miles, with the exception of a few missing bridges that you have to bypass/cross at grade,” says Mark Imgrund, head of the Peters Friends of the Montour Trail. Between the Arrowhead Trail and the completed sections of the Montour Trail mainline and Bethel Branch, there are eight miles of trail to enjoy in the Peters area. The long-range goal is to have one continuous trail running from the Pittsburgh area to Washington D.C. With gaps in the trails being closed every summer, that vision is close to becoming a reality. Peters Township’s trails will soon connect with the rest of the Montour Trail system, which, in turn, will link up with the Steel Valley Trail in Clairton, then with the Youghiogheny River Trail in McKeesport, which extends 100-miles to Meyersdale, Pennsylvania. There’s currently a 32-mile gap between Meyersdale and Cumberland, Maryland, but after that, there are 184-miles of continuous trail directly to D.C. |
