Taking on the World
When Vladimir Putin stepped down as president of Russia in May, a group of Peters residents already had the inside track on what the move might mean for the future of that country. That’s because the day before Dimitry Medvedev took office, the Peters Township Library hosted a University of Pittsburgh professor who specializes in Russia’s political history to discuss what the change in leadership will bring to Russia, Europe, and the United States.
That kind of timeliness and poignancy makes the library’s International Affairs Series one of the “Things We Love”. For five years, the library, through a partnership with the Pittsburgh World Affairs Council, has sponsored talks from specialists in security, foreign policy, and world affairs. Past speakers have included a former ambassador, State Department officials, and academic and military experts. The programs have proven extremely popular, drawing large crowds that include senior citizens, high school students, and everybody in- between. “There is simply no substitute for the opportunity to hear a bona fide expert in a particular field share their knowledge of global events with our students firsthand,” says Mark Redilla, a social studies teacher at Peters Township High School. The residents aren’t the only ones singing the program’s praises. The library has received several awards for hosting the program, including a state recognition for promoting lifetime learning. For the past two years, the series has been supported by a grant from the Veterans of Foreign Wars McMurray Post 764. The grant covers the honorarium provided to the speakers. The 2008-09 series is entitled, “Looking to the Future: the U.S. and the World” and will open on September 11th, when Dr. Sky Foerster, President of the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh, discusses "Seven Years After: The Shape of our World.” |
