By Brian Knavish
The setting is like something out of a fictional tale from yesteryear.
A quaint country barn tucked neatly next to a little lake plays host to live theater performances; folks from right up the road, and even some from hours away, stop by on spring and summer evenings to take in a performance. This is not an account taken from an old-time novel; no, it’s the genuine description of the Little Lake Theatre, a cultural staple of the Peters Township area for 60 years. To call the play-watching experience at the Little Lake Theatre “intimate” would be a massive understatement. Anyone seeing a performance at the Little Lake sits so close, it’s almost as if you’re watching a personal performance. The uniqueness of the experience is heightened in a variety of ways. For one thing, the theater is in-the-round – a rarity these days – meaning the audience surrounds all four sides of the stage. Also, the actors perform mere feet from the patrons; such proximity puts added emphasis on acting quality. The result is that each member of the audience can see and interpret every facial expression of the performers, so you know they better be “on.” The theater is run by the husband-wife duo of Sunny Disney Fitchett and Robert Fitchett, who strive to keep the play selections interesting. The theater produces classical drama, including plays by Shakespeare, modern favorites like Neil Simon’s Biloxi Blues, edgy popular works like Jeff Daniels’ Apartment 3A and intriguing, lesser-known works lsuch as The Foursome by Norm Foster. Saturday night performances feature a catered dinner, which makes visiting the barn on those nights something more of a complete evening. It’s hard not to love the Little Lake Theatre. The issue comes down to what to love more, the atmosphere or the performances themselves? |
