Originally, an Oktoberfest beer like a Marzenbier was brewed in
March and laid down in cool caves during the spring and summer.
Marzenbier was brewed at a higher gravity (between five and seven
percent), to minimize degradation.Today, with modern refrigeration,
Oktoberfest beers are brewed in the summer and served in the fall.
Marzenbier, the principal beer served at Oktoberfest, has a malty aroma and is a medium-strong version of the amber-red Vienna style of beers. The Oktoberfest tradition started in 1810 to celebrate the October 12th marriage of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig to the Saxon- Hildburghausen Princess Therese. The citizens of Munich were invited to join in the festivities which were held over five days before the city gates. Celebrations were held annually thereafter and grew larger and more elaborate. By the 1870s, mechanical rides were introduced to the festival. In 1908, the festival boasted Germany’s first roller coaster. When Munich began allowing beer on the fairgrounds, beer stands were set-up until they were eventually replaced in 1896 by beer halls. The beer halls were sponsored by the local breweries. The festival was eventually moved ahead to September to allow for better weather conditions.Today, the last day of the festival is the first Sunday in October. Over the past 200 years, Oktoberfest was canceled 24 times due to cholera epidemics and war. Why do imported beers cost more? Shipping is part of the cost, but the main reason for the higher price is due to their superior quality. Usually, imported beers contain better ingredients. The micro breweries have continued the tradition of quality and their price is consequently higher than beers produced by large domestic breweries. What is the best style of beer to have during the fall? As the days grow cooler seek out beers that contain a slightly higher alcohol content. Unlike the summer beers that offer a lighter flavor, the styles of Dopplebock, Brown Ales, and Double Abbeys offer a stronger flavor to excite the taste buds. These beers range in alcohol between 5 and 8 percent.Taste a superior Oktoberfest beer and you’ll feel its warmth. As the fall month’s get cooler your body will love you with these selections. |
